Mimiwhangata - is a place of great spiritual presence and exceptional beauty. This print captures a view looking down towards Mimiwhangata and Rimariki island.
Fortunately Mimiwhangata is also part of a 2,000 hectare Department of Conservation park which is surrounded by a marine reserve, and spans a peninsula with golden Mimiwhangata Bay on one side and sandy coves between little rocky headlands on the other. Its beaches and dunes harbor safe nesting sites for threatened shorebirds, whilst on the rocky cliffs grow large pōhutukawa and Kōwhai trees, which attract tūī when flowering. Substantial pockets of coastal forest with kānuka, kohekohe, tōtara and taraire remain on the hills above the beaches. Patches of karaka trees, oral history and archaeological evidence show Mimiwhangata was once inhabited by a substantial Māori community. However Mimiwhangata is almost deserted now – a quiet still paradise.
