I named this painting of pohutukawa with the phrase “the darling buds of May” in mind. This phrase refers to the opening buds in the northern hemisphere that point toward the warm season of summer ahead and to the exuberance and freshness of youth as it moves toward adult maturity.The pohutukawa tree flowering in early December – with my most favourite flower - has become an established and iconic part of Christmas in New Zealand.

This print depicts a red David Brown 990 tractor which has launched a boat off Whangaumu bay on the Tutukaka coast. Whangaumu bay is also known as Wellingtons Bay - a picturesque long, sandy beach - which is lovely for swimming.

This print of my most recent painting looks down onto Hahei beach and over to Te Pare Point with the Alderman islands in the distance. The serenity of this place, of places like this on a hot summer's day beckon the viewer to visit. I certainly want to go back to Hahei, it's been a while...

This print is taken from a photo I took looking out from Tiritiri Matangi island. Looking at the map I think the land forms in the distance have to be Little Barrier, Great Barrier and the Coromandel. It was an amazing place to visit, and I want to go back and stay overnight. In the late afternoon at the beach looking through the silhouette of a Pohutukawa tree up into the aether or quintessence (a medium which fills the space of the universe above the earthly sphere). The forms of this tree takes on an ethereal beauty - simultaneously familiar to us and otherworldly.

This painting/print views Browns island and Rangitoto island from east Auckland - looking out across the Tamaki strait. The Tamaki Strait is one of several passes between the islands of the inner Hauraki Gulf, near the entrance of Waitematā Harbour just off Auckland city (in New Zealand). This stretch of water separates the North Island (mainland) from Waiheke Island, east of Auckland city.

Te Hauturu-o-Toi (the official Māori title for Little Barrier Island). Little Barrier is depicted in the far left of this print. Te Hauturu-o-Toi means "the resting place of lingering breezes", a title which captured my attention, both as a very fitting description of the beautiful land I was studying to paint, along with my felt sense while painting this work. This large work (of 210+ painting hours) depicts an amazing view from the lookout on the very beautiful Roberton island (or Motuarohia island) one of the many stunning spots in the Bay of Islands - in New Zealand's north island. I named this work after the lovely song "Summertime", and also my memories growing up in Paihia exploring the many islands nearby - Roberton being one of them.
