Te Hauturu-o-Toi (the official Māori title for Little Barrier Island). Little Barrier is depicted in the far left of this print. Te Hauturu-o-Toi means "the resting place of lingering breezes", a title which captured my attention, both as a very fitting description of the beautiful land I was studying to paint, along with my felt sense while painting this work. I worked on this painting for six months, carefully considering detail, and the varying tones of lightness or darkness in every colour to create distance and balance within this composition. This large work (of 210+ painting hours) depicts an amazing view from the lookout on the very beautiful Roberton island (or Motuarohia island) one of the many stunning spots in the Bay of Islands - in New Zealand's north island. I named this work after the lovely song "Summertime", and also my memories growing up in Paihia exploring the many islands nearby - Roberton being one of them. The Puka (Meryta sinclairii) pictured, a beautiful tree that I simply love - is a large-leaved evergreen tree endemic to New Zealand that grows to about 8 meters tall. Puka have 27 different species, and occur naturally on the Three Kings islands and the Hen and Chicken islands. The tree has elliptical leaves which can grow up to 50 cm long and 20cm wide and have a glossy upper surface with green-white flowers and ball-bearing sized fruit, making them popular as a garden or street tree. Mimiwhangata - is a place of great spiritual presence and exceptional beauty. This print captures a view looking down towards Mimiwhangata and Rimariki island. Fortunately Mimiwhangata is also part of a 2,000 hectare Department of Conservation park which is surrounded by a marine reserve, and spans a peninsula with golden Mimiwhangata Bay on one side and sandy coves between little rocky headlands on the other. This print depicts a view from Mita Bay campground at Mahurangi Regional Park (West). While looking out from under the shady branches of a pohutukawa tree across turquoise water to Saddle island (Te Haupa island) and in the distance Motuora island, with the headland just around from Big Bay just visible to the left.

This is a print from my latest big painting which I've called "To Life" - after watching the documentary on Oliver Sacks. An amazing man and great doco depicting his life. 

The landscape background is Ponui island as viewed from the back of Waiheke Island, and the flowers of course Pohutukawa - maybe my favourite flower. Whether framed on paper or canvas this work stands out like a beautiful window looking out onto a summer's day on any wall.

This beautiful view looks down into Wenderholm Park depicting the picturesque Puhoi river surrounded by headlands covered in native forest.
